TAP - Talented Athlete Program

The Talented Athlete Program (TAP) at Sydney Secondary College is open to students in years 7 -10. The purpose of our TAP program is to cater for students who have been identified as being highly skilled or gifted in a team and/or individual sport through a specific selection process. The program aims to assist the selected athletes in achieving their goals in their chosen sport through training sessions and individualised performance feedback and support throughout the year.

Athletes are offered two training sessions per week where they are coached by qualified PDHPE staff members. The sessions make use of the school gym, oval and sports hall where the focus is on a range of fitness components such as cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular endurance, strength, flexibility, speed and agility. The TAP program involves athletes from a range of sports including swimming, athletics (track and field events), rugby league, cricket, AFL and hockey with each athlete working on components that are specific to their chosen sport(s) and their individual aims.

In previous years the SSC Leichhardt TAP program was a success with a number of athletes performing well in zone, regional and state level for their respective sports and we are looking to build upon such success. TAP athletes have access to specialist fitness equipment installed specifically for their use which has been partly funded by the small fee associated with joining the TAP program.

The TAP selection process targets students that:

  • -are currently competing at District/Zone level and above in their sport
  • -display high levels of physical fitness
  • -can commit to training 1 day/week.
