Duke of Edinburgh Award

In 2012, the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme returned to Leichhardt Campus. The year 9 students from 2012 embraced the award. They enthusiastically challenged themselves and made great friendships along the way.

Since then, the Award has grown into a 'must do' extra curricular activity. Every year there are 2 levels running, Bronze and Silver, consisting of year 10 and year 9 students.

What is the Duke of Edinburugh Award Scheme?

For the benefit of the parents, the students have to complete 4 sections in order to achieve an award for their respective level. These are: Service, Skills, Recreation and Adventurous Journey

  • Service: Typically, volunteering for a non-profit organisation or doing community service would satisfactorily qualify for the service component of the award.
  • Skills: typically involve an activity where the student is pursuing and he/she is striving to improve in that activity over a given period of time.
  • Recreation: is in the form of sporting pursuit, whether it may be in a structured environment such as the local weekend football, cricket, and netball team. It could also be unstructured. Either way, the essence is for the students to raise a bit of sweat doing their recreation activity.
  • The Adventurous Journey is bushwalking. This activity will be conducted by the school. Appropriate training will be done, such as first aid, bushcraft, and map reading.

For further information on the program please visit the Duke of Edinburgh website.

Timeframe for completion of the award

For the Bronze Award, the students have to complete 3 months of regular activities in their chosen field. However, please note that they have to elect a major activity which they have to complete in 6 months.

It's best of students complete all their activities prior to undertaking the bushwalking expedition.

At the end of 3 months, the assessor should sign off and verify that the student has completed the activity to a satisfactory standard.
