Big Picture

In Big Picture, students learn through their personal interests and design their own learning around a unique set of passions, needs, preferences and goals.

Big Picture is available for Sydney Secondary College students in year 11 and 12 at our senior campus at Blackwattle Bay.

What is Big Picture?

  • Students learn in and out of school
  • A personalised design
  • Choice and decision-making opportunities
  • Learning through interests
  • Students learn as part of an advisory - a ‘learning community’, where every student feels known, supported and respected
  • An advisor teacher guides and leads the students in the advisory
  • The International Big Picture Learning Credential (IBPLC) offers a rigorous non-ATAR pathway from secondary to tertiary study that is currently accepted by 18 universities around Australia.

The Learning Plan

The Learning Plan describes the learning that will take place each term.

Students are assessed through the six Big Picture learning goals:

  1. Knowing how to learn
  2. Empirical reasoning
  3. Social reasoning
  4. Quantitative reasoning
  5. Communication
  6. Personal qualities

This learning is presented at the end of each term in the form of an Exhibition.

Eliza's senior thesis investigated the experience of twice-exceptional students, those who are both gifted and disabled, within the Australian education system.
