Assessment and reporting
Our teachers use a variety of strategies to assess student learning.
Teachers observe students' work in class and look closely at tasks throughout the year. They also formally assess a student's achievement based on the outcomes described in the syllabusof the key learning area.
As a parent or carer, you’ll receive a written report twice a year:
- At the end of term 2
- At the end of term 4
Your student's written academic report will give you a clear picture of your child’s achievements – what they know and can do. We use the common grade scale in reporting.
In addition to written reports parents and carers are invited to speak with their student's teachers at the student progress interviews held in late term 2 and early term 3. Student progress interviews are a valuable opportunity for parents to discuss student progress directly with each class teacher, hear any suggestions regarding areas of improvement, and ask any questions they have.
Student progress interviews are booked through the Sentral Parent Portal. Parents are encouraged to set up access at the start of the year to secure preferred timeslots when bookings open.
Assessments
We provide detailed information to students about what we expect from them throughout the year and how their work will be assessed.
The assessment schedules and booklets below set out the formal assessment tasks for each subject. Students will be provided with a detailed assessment notification for each task at least two weeks prior to each assessment due date.
In Year 10, students must meet the eligibility criteria to receive a Record of School Achievement (RoSA). The RoSA is a comprehensive record that documents a student’s academic accomplishments up to the date they leave school. More information can be found here: Record of School Achievement.
Illness and misadventure
Student absence on the day of an assessment task, or the late submission of an assessment task, due to illness or misadventure must be supported by an illness and misadventure form and supporting documentation. This must be presented to the relevant Head Teacher prior to 8:50am on the first day of the student's return to school. Students must be prepared to attempt the task on the first day of their return to school.
Other assessments
In addition to the assessments for each key learning area, students have a number of other formal assessments throughout years 7-10:
- National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) – reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, punctuation and grammar) and numeracy tests for students in Years 7 and 9. The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) holds the tests in May each year. Results and student reports are released in August.
- Validation of Assessment for Learning and Individual Development (VALID) – online diagnostic science assessments for students in Year 8.
- HSC minimum standard - a requirement all students must meet to receive their Higher School Certificate. It ensures students have essential skills in reading, writing and numeracy. Students can meet the standard through various assessments during Years 10-12.
