Our aim
To ensure a smooth transition from school to post school options and to prepare students for independent living.
About us
The Support Unit at Leichhardt Campus is comprised of four classes: two classes for students with mild intellectual disabilities (a junior class, Years 7 & 8 and a senior class, years 9 & 10). We also have a class for students with moderate disabilities (Years 7- 10) and a class for students with autism (Years 7- 10). Staff comprises of four full-time Special Education teachers and four School Learning Support Officers.
Life skills courses
Students in support classes access comprehensive Life Skills programs which focus on skills for independent living. These include:
- English
- Mathematics
- Science
- Australian History
- Australian Geography
- Work Education
- Food Technology
- Industrial Technology
- Visual Arts
- Drama
- Music
- Personal Development, Health and PE.
Students who complete Yrs 7-10 achieve a Yr 10 School Certificate (Life Skills). The majority of our students transition to our Senior Campus at Blackwattle Bay and achieve a Higher School Certificate on completion of year 12.
Vocational training
Students in years 9 & 10 attend work experience once a week. Students may work in a work crew with a job coach or in individual placements which are supervised by a teacher.
Community participation
Students develop independent living skills in community situations. The program includes visiting local shopping centres, accessing the local library and travel training.
